A source close to the boxing legend's family says the 74-year-old is in
an "extraordinarily grave" condition in a Texas hospital.
Muhammad Ali is "close to death" in a Texas
hospital after being admitted for respiratory problems, a source close
to his family has told Reuters.
The former world heavyweight boxing champion is said to be in an "extraordinarily grave" condition. There has been much speculation about Ali's health since the 74-year-old was admitted to hospital.
Despite this, his spokesman said on Friday that the boxing legend was in a fair condition, and would be discharged soon.
Ali's respiratory issues may have been complicated by Parkinson's disease, which the champion was diagnosed with in 1984.
Doctors believe Ali's neurological condition, which was identified just three years after his retirement, could be linked to the thousands of punches he took during his illustrious career.
The fighter had fully recovered after being admitted to hospital in December 2014 for a mild case of pneumonia, and was treated for a severe urinary tract infection the following month.
Although he has kept a low profile in recent years, Ali attended a Celebrity Fight Night in April to benefit a Parkinson's treatment facility in his name.
Late last year he also spoke out against Donald Trump's calls for Muslims to be banned from entering the United States.
Ali, who is Muslim himself, had called for people to "stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda".
He added: "True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion."
